Epicureanism is the philosophy of Epicurus. Epicurus thought that man should strive toward happiness. He taught that people should not fear death, nor the gods, and should seek pleasure in this life. This philosophy was opposed to seeking austerity in the hopes of earning a pleasant after-life. Because pleasure is the main emphasis of life, Epicureanism is by its nature a hedonistic philosophy.
